Cape Cod Chapter volunteer Janice Hewins was presented with a 2013 ALF Len Hadley Volunteerism award during the American Lighthouse Foundation’s annual Lighthouse Gala, which was held at the Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside Hotel on May 4, 2013.
Over ten years ago, Debbie & Bill Jenkins invited a close friend and her family for their first overnight stay at Race Point Lighthouse. The experience usually proves to be remarkable; and one this was no exception. Janice Hewins and her family instantly loved the place. While walking the beach with his father, their young son saw an eagle. Their daughter couldn’t stop sketching and journaling about her experiences at the lighthouse. That first evening started with a lighthouse tour at sunset. After a tasty fall supper, the families gathered to play games in the warm living room, lit by gas lanterns.
It wasn’t long before Janice was asking about Race Point’s Keeper program. Their first tour as Keepers went off without a hitch! A social person, both gracious and welcoming, “Keeper Jan” proved to be exceptional. It didn’t take long before she was knee-deep in the gift shop, offering to act as purchaser for clothing. She found one-of-a-kind apparel, then sacrificed her own commissions to keep the prices affordable for guests. Janice also volunteers regularly for the Mariner’s Day tour, using her considerable skills as a salesperson to bring in record-breaking gift shop purchases.
Two years ago, Janice was voted onto the Cape Cod Chapter Board in the area of Special Projects, including Moderator of the Chapter’s Facebook & Twitter accounts. Her extraordinary talent and unending enthusiasm soon gave us exposure to far larger audiences than ever before. She has even found the time to help purchase new bedding for the guest rooms, and furniture for the cozy living room – all in keeping with the 1950‘s-period motif.
There is a quote about volunteering that describes Janice Hewins perfectly: “The broadest, and maybe the most meaningful definition of volunteering is doing more than you have to because you want to, in a cause that you consider good.” Janice, we are honored to recognize you today for the 2013 Len Hadley Volunteerism award. Your brilliant commitment and passion for Race Point Lighthouse cannot be dimmed.
The American Lighthouse Foundation honors Janice Hewins as our Cape Cod Chapter’s 2013 ALF Len Hadley Volunteerism Award recipient!
