The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) published a story on February 12, 2026, highlighting the AIS-based messaging system called StationKeeper. This solution-based technology, which has been created by MotionInfo, a maritime data company based in Massachusetts, is helping to protect the endangered North Atlantic right whale.
Many of the 60-plus host sites along the Atlantic seaboard – from Maine to Florida, are lighthouses. “We’ve had great success working with folks to find locations. When they hear about the project, they want to be involved and help out,” said Moses Calouro, CEO of MotionInfo.
The American Lighthouse Foundation (ALF) is working closely with MotionInfo on the installation of StationKeeper units in historic lighthouses. To date, eight ALF lighthouses are hosting this technology: Cape Elizabeth (ME), Little River (ME), Owls Head (ME), Pemaquid Point (ME), Portsmouth Harbor (NH), Race Point (MA), Sandy Neck (MA) and Wood Island (ME). In addition, two ALF affiliates are hosting StationKeeper units: Halfway Rock (ME) and Nauset (MA).

American Lighthouse Foundation staff/volunteers are also assisting with the StationKeeper installation process itself, including at non-ALF light station sites such as Gay Head (MA), Highland (MA), Matinicus Rock (ME) and Monhegan Island (ME).
This cool initiative is growing leaps and bounds. MotionInfo’s StationKeeper network will expand to even more lighthouses in 2026 – strengthening both mariner safety and marine conservation. Here in the 21st century, lighthouses are protecting life at sea in more ways than one!
