Have you ever dreamed of touring Pomham Rocks Lighthouse? If so, then don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to retrace the steps of bygone keepers at this beautifully restored sentinel in 2022!

Located on an island just offshore from Riverside, RI, Pomham Rocks Lighthouse is the last standing historic lighthouse on the Providence River.

The Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse, a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation, is offering our first ever public tours during June, July and August as we celebrate 150 years of lighting the way on Narragansett Bay.

Tour Information:

Take a self-guided tour of the historic 1871 Pomham Rocks Lighthouse. The last of five lighthouses situated on the Providence River, this lighthouse is still a working navigational light and has been beautifully restored both inside and out.

To get to Pomham Rocks Lighthouse, you will take a 30-minute boat ride to the island and along the way you will see the former sites of the Sassafras Point (now part of the Port of Providence) and Fuller Rock Lighthouses. Our interior tours will also give a nod to the other lighthouses that lit the way for mariners since the nineteenth century at the northern end of the Bay.

Pomham Rocks’ fourth order Fresnel lens is on display at the lighthouse.

There are several posters throughout the lighthouse from which you will learn about the history of the local lighthouses and the keepers. Step into the parlor where you will see an absolutely stunning artifact of lighthouse history – our recently returned fourth-order Fresnel lens!

After touring the historic interior, there is an optional climb to the lantern room where you will enjoy beautiful views of Narragansett Bay and the working port of Providence. Our knowledgeable docents will also be available to answer any questions you may have and tell you a story or two!

Tour FAQs:

  • The entire tour and boat ride will take approximately 2 ½ hours
  • All passengers must be at least 6 years of age
  • Due to the location, we are not handicap-accessible
