May 2016: Brandon gently led Emily, his fiancée-to-be, up the steps to the lantern room. Meanwhile, their families dashed out from their hiding places to stand on the grass below the tower. Brandon knelt on one knee, his basketball-player frame still quite visible in the windows above, and had Emily remove her blindfold as he offered the engagement ring. A cheer went up from the spectators below, who saw her acceptance, and they waved flowers and bottles of champagne. Thus concluded another successful engagement at the Point.

Bob Kline, Vice-President of the Friends of the Pemaquid Point Light, then let friends and family into the tower to congratulate the young couple. Brandon was to graduate that weekend from the University of Maine. Joined by Emily, he will be studying in London for a year, meanwhile playing professional basketball overseas. His mother confided that this was the “best day of her life,” and all agreed the romance of the Lighthouse at sunset had really made the whole event exceptionally memorable. As Bob said, while the sunset faded into a velvet night, “This is what the Lighthouse is for.”
