The popular Boston area television show, Chronicle, which aired on May 9, 2011, featured Maine lighthouses on their Main Streets and Back Roads program.
The Boston WCVB TV-5 program included four lights under the care of the American Lighthouse Foundation – Owls Head, Pemaquid Point, Rockland Breakwater and Wood Island.
Chronicle’s show focused on more than the lighthouses themselves. The program shared with the viewer delightful aspects of our lighthouse heritage such as what it was like for the bygone keepers and their families to keep the lights shining.
Chronicle also touched on what is being done today to save and preserve Maine’s lighthouses, highlighted the wonderful natural environments surrounding the historic sites, and even delved into a few legends & lore, like the resident ghost at Wood Island Light Station.
The American Lighthouse Foundation wishes to thank Boston WCVB-TV 5 and Chronicle for helping to raise more public awareness for Maine lighthouses, with special thanks going out to the show’s producer, Stella Gould, reporter JC Monahan and videographer Bob Oliver. The crew was great to work with!

Hooray for lighthouses! I saw the tv spots and really liked them. They should bring more attention to and enjoyment of these important lighthouses. You may have seen an article I wrote in the May 2010 Lighthouse Digest Magazine, “The Lighthouses of Maine & Ourselves.” It was also reprinted in the World Lighthouse Society Magazine 2011. I am grateful for your work.
