Visit Seguin Island Light Station

Journey to a place where time stands still…an island lighthouse adventure awaits you!

Spend the day exploring Seguin Island and its historic 1857 lighthouse- located 2.5 miles offshore at the mouth of Maine’s Kennebec River.

Outside, adventure awaits! Enjoy a hike on one or more of the five trails, each with ample flora and fauna, around the island. While you are exploring the light station grounds, you may even spot whales or porpoises from atop the island.

Tour the Lighthouse & Museum:

During the summer months, the onsite keepers would be delighted to give you a tour of the tower and museum. You will learn about fascinating stories of the light station’s compelling history, which has shined bright since it was first commissioned by President George Washington in 1795. While walking in the steps of the keepers inside the lighthouse, be sure to look up into the lantern and catch an enthralling glimpse of the tower’s prized jewel, an active first order Fresnel lens. Also, don’t miss a stop in the gift shop while you are there!

Volunteer Keepers are on the island (weather permitting) to welcome visitors around June 1st to early September. The island is open year-round, however the buildings and outhouse are closed during the off-season.

How to Get to Seguin Island:

Seguin Island Light Station is located offshore and is only accessible by boat or local charters. The nonprofit Friends of Seguin Island Light Station, who owns and maintains the island and light station, has detailed information on how to get to the island using your own boat or hiring a charter available on their website. You will also find helpful guidelines and a trail map for once you get ashore.
