In April 2024, the American Lighthouse Foundation formed a Storm & Mitigation Committee dedicated to developing a series of best practices that can help lighthouses become more resilient in the face of future storms. These best practice resources will contain useful / practical information on topics such as hazard mitigation and resiliency.
As a national leader in lighthouse preservation, the American Lighthouse Foundation is heeding the call to help historic light stations nationwide to be better prepared for extreme weather events. Whether it is damage caused by powerful storms or rising sea levels, the adverse effects of a changing climate are beginning to take their toll on America’s lighthouses.
In addition, the ALF Storm & Mitigation Committee, which is comprised of individuals knowledgeable in lighthouse preservation, disaster recovery and mitigation, will bring together broader resources, including technical guidance.
Extreme weather events will continue to occur – the time to act is now. Through the efforts of our Storm & Mitigation Committee, the American Lighthouse Foundation is doing just that – acting to help strengthen the changing world of lighthouse preservation.
