The American Lighthouse Foundation is proud to be collaborating with MotionInfo to help protect the endangered North Atlantic right whale. Historic lighthouses up and down the Atlantic seaboard are joining MotionInfo’s growing network as host sites of this amazing system.

Presently, the American Lighthouse Foundation has six lights equipped with MotionInfo’s StationKeeper system, with more to come. StationKeeper utilizes the Automatic Identification System (AIS) technology to help reduce vessel strikes involving large whale species, including the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale, by delivering targeted safety messages and navigation data directly to vessels transiting whale habitats.

The following recap by Portia Calouro of MotionInfo highlights how students from Orleans Elementary School in Massachusetts recently learned about StationKeeper, and how lighthouses are playing an important role in this vital effort.

According to Portia Calouro, “Second-grade students at Orleans Elementary School on Cape Cod are diving deep into their ocean studies, focusing on the North Atlantic right whale, one of the most endangered species in the world.

“Recently, the classes welcomed Nate Knight from MotionInfo, who introduced them to StationKeeper, an innovative program that helps protect marine life along the Atlantic coast.

“To bring the lesson to life, each student designed their own miniature transceiver units, decorating them with drawings of whales and some of the 25+ iconic lighthouses where StationKeepers are currently hosted from Maine to Florida.

“This creative and educational collaboration had the 7- and 8-year-olds thinking about how technology and historic structures can work hand in hand to protect life in and on the oceans.”

As MotionInfo notes, StationKeeper involves local hosts who make a national impact, while helping raise global awareness for the endangered North Atlantic right whale. Talk about cool!
