Seeking Volunteer Docents for Pemaquid Point Lighthouse in Summer 2024

As the summer season approaches, the Friends of the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse – a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation, is seeking volunteer docents dedicated to educating and engaging visitors about the rich history of the lighthouse and its Maine coastal surroundings.

Docents provide information regarding the lighthouse’s construction and preservation, the lives of keepers, and events that have occurred at the site.

The Pemaquid Point Lighthouse is an historic treasure that dates back to the early 1835. The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation. The optic is maintained by the United States Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team South Portland.

In 2007, the Friends of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse completed a full exterior restoration of the tower – and in 2010, completed a full interior restoration so that visitors may climb the tower, admire the view, and see the classical Fresnel lens that was installed in 1856 and is still guiding mariners nightly.

Pemaquid Point Light is one of a very few operational lighthouses that is open seven days a week during the summer for guests to tour. This opportunity depends solely on our volunteer docents.

For anyone interested in history who enjoys meeting people, being a docent is a rewarding opportunity to enjoy being at Pemaquid Point Park overlooking the beautiful Gulf of Maine.

The lighthouse is open from Memorial Day Weekend until Columbus (Indigenous Peoples’) Day. Docents choose 3.5-hour shifts to assist visitors and answer questions. Training is available. Shifts are flexible.

For information to become a docent at the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, please contact: Adair Heyl at pemaquidpointlighthousefriends@gmail.com or Dom Pucci at pplighthousekeeper@gmail.com
