If you love Maine’s lighthouses and would enjoy experiencing these stately towers in a more up-close and personal fashion, then Maine Open Lighthouse Day is beckoning your name!

On September 10, 2022, the State’s lighthouses will “shine” their brightest as nearly two dozen beacons and museums plan to open their doors and welcome the public to step back in time.

This popular annual event – the largest of its kind in the nation, is sponsored by the Maine Office of Tourism, U.S. Coast Guard and the American Lighthouse Foundation, and attracts visitors from all over New England and beyond for the rare opportunity to get inside so many lighthouses during a single day. But the event’s lure doesn’t stop there!

The real charm of Maine Open Lighthouse Day is discovered in the fact that these venerable sentinels are delightful “exclamation marks” upon the vast natural beauty of the Maine coast over which they preside.

When ascending to the “best seat in the house” – high atop these ageless sentinels, the visitor not only learns about the fascinating history of the lights, they also have a chance to admire panoramic views of the Maine coast and sparkling waters that stretch as far as the eye can behold.

And still there’s more!

Lighthouses also stand guard amidst some of Maine’s most picturesque harbors and coastal communities, which invite you to explore for a fuller experience of life by the sea in the Pine Tree State. From majestic windjammers and hardworking lobster boats to delightful dining by the water and shops loaded with Maine-made gifts, there are a plethora of activities to round-out your memories in the making during Maine Open Lighthouse Day.
