Craig Mathieson of ALF’s Friends of Rockland Harbor Lights was honored with an ALF Len Hadley Volunteer Award during the American Lighthouse Foundation’s annual Lighthouse Gala, which was held at the Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport, Maine, on April 29, 2018.

A successful lighthouse effort is only as good as the diversified skills of its volunteers. Some individuals are handy at repairs, others at sharing history – and still others at fundraising or educational outreach. What is not as plentiful in supply are tech-savvy volunteers, which makes Craig Mathieson’s contributions to the Friends of Rockland Harbor Lights (FRHL) quite unique and valuable.

Craig has served as FRHL’s design person and online webmaster for a number of years now, leading the effort to establish and maintain a webcam at Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse. The webcam quickly proved a very popular addition at the lighthouse and is viewed daily by countless thousands of people from all over the country and throughout the world.

In addition, Craig is a local videographer, filmmaker and Station Manager for Maine Coast TV. His professional background in TV and video were a natural fit when it came time for the production of two lighthouse documentaries to benefit the preservation and education mission of the American Lighthouse Foundation.

Craig’s first documentary is entitled, “Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse: A History. The video tells the story of the nearly one mile-long Rockland Breakwater and the 1902 Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, which is located at the south end of the granite wall.

His second documentary – “Living at the Light: A History of the Owls Head Lighthouse,” tells the fascinating history of Owls Head Light, combined with an array of human interest stories, including personal accounts by two people who lived at the light.

The videos have been instrumental in helping raise additional funds for ALF, while educating viewers on the history and importance of Rockland Breakwater and Owls Head lights.

Craig also finds time to volunteer for work projects and tower tours at Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse. His overall contributions to lighthouse education are many and therefore, we are proud to present Craig Mathieson with a 2018 Lend Hadley Volunteer Award!
