A Maine Community Foundation press release on June 6, 2013…
ROCKLAND — The American Lighthouse Foundation (ALF) of Rockland has received a $5,000 community building grant from the Knox County Fund of the Maine Community Foundation. This funding will support improvements to public access and visitor experience at the Owls Head Lighthouse.
The ALF Visitor Experience and Access Project will install exterior interpretive signs that will bring to light key features of the area around the lighthouse. The project will also create a new walking path and repair the existing pathway around the base of the lighthouse. These upgrades will reinforce the educational and cultural opportunities available at the Owls Head Lighthouse.
This year the Knox County Fund is celebrating its 20th anniversary of grantmaking. To honor that anniversary, an anonymous donor has offered a $20,000 challenge grant. All donations to the fund in 2013 will be matched up to that amount.
The mission of the American Lighthouse Foundation is to save and preserve the nation’s historic light stations and their rich heritage. For more information, visit www.lighthousefoundation.org or call 207-594-4174.
