With the New Year nearly upon us, I would like to take this opportunity to say “thank you” to the New England Lighthouse Lovers for another job well done in 2010.
NELL may not have a particular lighthouse under its care, but the American Lighthouse Foundation is thankful for the many lights that your chapter has helped this year, as well as in years past.
Over the last decade, I can think of no other group in the country WITHOUT a lighthouse who has done more to help preservation and raise public awareness for lighthouses than NELL.
Your chapter’s admirable contributions to ALF and the lighthouse community at large go well beyond the $120,000-plus dollars NELL has generously provided to projects over a ten-year period.
In fact, NELL’s real value exceeds any monetary aspects associated with our shared work in the lighthouse community – it’s your group’s ability to mix fun and people together with lighthouses that is the most priceless component of your efforts.
When the lighthouse preservation community looks back on this time one day in the future to come, the story of NELL and its lasting impact on our historic lights will no doubt stand out as one of lighthouse history’s finest moments.
Just like the keepers of old, NELL continues to add that all-important human spirit to lighthouse preservation – and this unquenchable spirit – like the lights, is inspirational!
I know I can speak on behalf of all of the American Lighthouse Foundation’s chapters and lights when I say that NELL’s care and commitment is truly appreciated. Together, ALF’s chapters form this great team we call the American Lighthouse Foundation, and NELL is definitely one of the shining pillars of our organization’s success, growth and sustainability.
There is little doubt in 2011 that should a lighthouse be in need of grant funds for a critical project or require many caring hands to carry out a volunteer work detail that NELL’s modern day keepers will once again answer the call. That’s who NELL is – and why your chapter’s efforts continue to provide the gleam for the “light” of so many projects.
Thank you and carry on!
