“Old Glory” Rises above

Pomham Rocks Signifying the

Return of the Lightkeepers

By Bob Trapani, Jr.

When the last Coast Guard keepers left Pomham Rocks Lighthouse and lowered the American flag at the station one last time in 1974, it appeared that a golden era had forever passed into the annals of time. Thirty-one years later history has come full circle with the return of the lightkeepers thanks to a cooperative effort between ExxonMobil East Providence Terminal, the American Lighthouse

To symbolically signify the return of keepers to Pomham Rocks

Lighthouse, a flag raising ceremony was held on June 6, 2005 at the historic site. With representatives from ExxonMobil, Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse, the American Lighthouse Foundation and local media looking on, Chief Herman Hause, Officer in Charge of U.S. Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team Bristol, Rhode Island, was given the honor of raising both the American Flag and a replica of the U.S. Lighthouse Service flag high above the light station grounds in a stirring tribute to the past, present and future of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse.

“Clearly the recent flag raising ceremony at Pomham Rocks Lighthouse has been one of the most significant highlights since the Friends of Pomham

Don Doucette of the Friends of

Pomham Rocks Light

Rocks Lighthouse began contemplating the restoration process about five years ago,” said Don Doucette, acting president of the friends group. “We are sure that all who attended felt a tug of patriotism and pride in the United Stated of America and realized the long standing traditions represented in lighthouses – the saving of lives and protection of property for the common good. Moreover, the important sacrifices people have made and will continue to make in this regard. The continued existence of the Pomham Rocks Lighthouse carries on these traditions. The citizens of East

Providence, Rhode Island, and surrounding communities are living examples of the pride and tradition represented in Pomham Rocks Lighthouse and their extended communities.”

During the flag raising ceremony, Greg Demarco, Terminal Superintendent for ExxonMobil and 2nd vice-chairman of the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse spoke of the importance of the cooperative effort to save the 1871 historic lighthouse for future generations. Tim Harrison, president of the American Lighthouse Foundation concluded the ceremonial remarks by reminding the crowd of the many sacrifices made by the keepers of yesteryear to send out the light and how present day efforts to save the lighthouse parallel this honorable

legacy. “Although the flag raising ceremony was the official kick-off for the beginning phase of the restoration of the lighthouse, it really symbolizes that new life has been instilled at the lighthouse, thus creating a new era for the future.” Harrison went on to say, “Just like the lighthouse keepers of yesteryear who kept the lights, we are now the keepers of tomorrow. After all, lighthouses were built to save lives – now it’s our turn to save the lighthouses.”

Following the conclusion of the flag raising ceremony, visitors disembarked the island for the mainland to the sight of “Old

Glory” flying high on the wings of a stiff wind – its red, white and blue colors stretched out in pride over the light station. The spectacular scene not only paid tribute to the legacy of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse but also to its new stewards – the American Lighthouse Foundation and Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse, who consider it a true honor to “assume the watch” in perpetuity as the station’s new keepers of the light.

Complete Text of Don Doucette’s Remarks During

the Flag Raising Ceremony at Pomham Rocks Light Station on June 6, 2005…

“Today, as we prepare to raise – once again, the flag of the United States of America over the Pomham Rocks Lighthouse, we acknowledge a new phase and direction for Pomham as we begin the tasks of restoration and preservation.

We stand on special ground – ground set apart for a unique purpose on bedrock, which supports this lighthouse and related signal apparatus. Since 1871 Pomham Light has guided the way for safe passage of waterborne vessels and craft, including their crews, passengers and cargoes.

Many a wayfarer has entered this harbor having experienced peril at sea. Others leave, not knowing their fate. Hear the words of the Psalmist (107):”

“Those who go down to the sea in ships,

Who do business on great waters,

They see the works of the Lord,

And his wonders in the deep.

For He commands and raises the stormy wind,

Which lifts up the waves of the sea.

They mount up to the heavens,

They go down again to the depths…

Then they cry out…in their trouble,

An He brings them out of their distresses.

He calms the storm,

Then they are glad because they are quiet;

So He guides them to their desired haven.”

“Long may the flag of the United States of America wave over the Pomham Rocks Lighthouse and long may this dwelling point toward safe haven, a snug harbor and help the mariner to find rest.”
