Pomham Rocks
Lighthouse has a much brighter future now thanks to a partnership
between ExxonMobil Pipeline Company in East Providence, Rhode Island,
and the American Lighthouse Foundation. The partnership, which was
formalized in early 2005, is the result of an unyielding passion and
dedication exhibited by local residents to see the 1871 historic
lighthouse saved. Led by Don and Nancy Doucette, the effort evolved into
the formation of the Friends of the Pomham Rocks Lighthouse – a new
chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation as of this year.

The partnership
was formalized under the guidelines of a three-year lease agreement between
ExxonMobil and the American Lighthouse Foundation. At that time, Greg
DeMarco, Terminal Superintendent for ExxonMobil, commented, “In our meeting
over the last year, we were impressed with the American Lighthouse
Foundation’s ability to innovatively and successfully handle preservation
projects.” Demarco went on to say, “That’s why we were excited and pleased
to form this partnership with them.” Since that time, the combination of the
mutual respect for each other, which has produced a wonderful working
relationship between the two entities, and the shared desire to see Pomham
Rocks Lighthouse saved in perpetuity, has yielded an extension of the
original lease.

executed a new

Foundation to
cultivate sustainable financial support more effectively within the greater
East Providence community – efforts that no doubt will have a positive
impact on the lighthouse in the coming years. “The new 25-year lease shows
ExxonMobil’s long-term commitment to the American Lighthouse Foundation, not
only with the preservation of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse, but to ALF’s mission
statement as a whole,” says Tim Harrison.
Upon the formation
of the chapter, the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse immediately set out
on a capital campaign to raise money for the lighthouse restoration work at
the light station. At that time, ExxonMobil donated $25,000 to kick-off the
campaign. Since that time the Friends of Pomham Rocks have raised nearly
$100,000 for Pomham Rocks. The chapter’s fundraising efforts received
another major boost following the flag raising ceremony on June 6th
at Pomham Rocks Lighthouse as ExxonMobil Superintendent Greg Demarco
presented Don Doucette, the acting chairman of the group, with another
$25,000 contribution.
Don Doucette was
touched by ExxonMobil’s commitment to helping save Pomham Rocks Light,
saying, “Personally, I am elated with the two $25,000 |

donations the
ExxonMobil Corporation has passed along through their local
representative, Greg Demarco.” Doucette went on to comment,
“Symbolically and materially, ExxonMobil has indicated that they are
with us in the completion of the Pomham restoration process and we with
them. The restoration program has now evolved from a concept into a
reality, which is exciting. We are grateful in many ways for the
extended hand of hospitality by the ExxonMobil Corporation and we look
forward to a successful ongoing mutual working relationship with the
Pomham project.”

summed up
the latest gift from ExxonMobil, saying, “This is the second $25,000
donation that ExxonMobil has presented to the American Lighthouse
Foundation. The contributions demonstrate that one of America’s major
corporations believes in what ALF stands for. They know that ALF has a
proven track record in lighthouse preservation; otherwise, ExxonMobil
probably would never have considered the partnership.”
Harrison went on
to say, “ALF and ExxonMobil now hope that many of America’s other major
corporations will follow ExxonMobil’s lead in helping the American
Lighthouse Foundation save and preserve our nation’s lighthouse structures,
as well as saving the history and heritage associated with them. In
addition, this partnership shows ExxonMobil’s commitment to ALF’s
educational mission to teach the public – especially the school-age
children, about America’s lighthouse history.”
