Abcore Signs Contract with the American
Lighthouse Foundation to Restore Pomham Rocks Light
By Bob Trapani, Jr.

Let the work
begin! On June 6, 2005, Tim Harrison, president of the American
Lighthouse Foundation, and Keith Lescarbeau, president of Abcore
Restoration Company in Narragansett, Rhode Island, signed and executed a
historic $283,000 contract to restore Pomham Rocks Lighthouse back to
its former glory.

the
Victorian-style wooden frame lighthouse is the kind of restoration project
that appeals to Abcore Restoration Company. During an investigation of the
structural components of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse, Lescarbeau discovered the
original beveled siding concealed by contemporary siding. “This is a real
treasure,” says Lescarbeau. “It affords us an opportunity to connect with
what (the late Providence preservationist) Antoinette Downing used to call
the original rhythm of the architecture.”
The restoration
work applied to Pomham Rocks Lighthouse will be enacted in phases. The first
phase of the project – which will begin immediately, |

will include
the repair and restoration of the structure’s roof, lantern room and
exterior siding and trim. The goal is to have Phase One of the
restoration completed by November in order to remove the light from the
adjacent steel skeleton tower and have the U.S. Coast Guard re-establish
it inside the lantern room of the historic lighthouse. Lescarbeau
commented that once Phase One of the restoration was complete, the
lighthouse would be “structurally sound, water-tight and looking good.”
Tim Harrison
cited the importance of the efforts of the Friends of Pomham Rocks
Lighthouse, saying, “One of the reasons for the ongoing great success of
ALF is because of |

the strong
chapters that we have created in local communities. Within six months of
signing the lease for Pomham Rocks Lighthouse, the chapter has been able to
secure enough funding to start Phase One of the restoration of the historic
lighthouse.” With an eye on the future, Harrison went on to comment, “Once
Phase One of the restoration is complete, the U.S. Coast Guard can reinstall
a light in the historic tower. A beacon that has been darkened for 25 years
will once again be an active aid to navigation as well as a working historic
monument of yesteryear – lighting the way for the future.”
