Pomham Rocks Lighthouse

Education Update

Under the guidance and direction of art teacher Mrs. Kim Boucher, the students in the 4th and 5th grades – 180 in all, at the Myron J. Francis and Alice M. Waddington Schools in East Providence drew artwork pictures of the 21 lighthouses of Rhode Island.

During the week previous to the art lesson on lighthouses, David Kelleher of the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse, a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation, presented a program to the students about all the lighthouses in the Ocean State. Mr. Kelleher showed the students pictures and models of all the lighthouses to familiarize them with each one and

to help them begin the process of selecting which beacon they would like to draw.

On the day of the art lesson, Mrs. Boucher also provided them with sample drawings of some of the lighthouses taken from a large poster of Rhode Island lighthouses. The art lesson on lighthouses was part of the plan by the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse education committee to

begin suggesting the use of lighthouses within the curriculum in the East Providence schools, along with the more comprehensive classroom lessons presented by Mr. Kelleher to other grade levels.

The drawings produced by the students were quite extraordinary, and pleased Mrs. Boucher, Mr. Kelleher, their classroom teachers and the students themselves. A total of one hundred student drawings were selected to be displayed in the main hallway of the East Providence City Hall. The drawings from the

Francis School will be displayed the week of June 5, 2006 and the drawings from the Waddington School will be displayed the week of June 12th. The committee is also thinking of using some of these wonderful drawings as pictures for a 2007 calendar as a fundraiser for the continued restoration of the Pomham Rocks Lighthouse.
